For over three and a half decades, Dr. Ramesh Kumar Sen has been reshaping the landscape of orthopedic care in India. As the Principal Director and Head of the Institute of Orthopedic Surgery at Max Super Specialty Hospital in Mohali, he brings a wealth of expertise that few in his field can match.

Dr. Sen’s journey through orthopedics has been marked by a passionate focus on some of medicine’s most challenging procedures. He has distinguished himself particularly in complex pelvic and acetabular surgeries—operations that require extraordinary precision and skill. His expertise extends to joint replacement surgeries, including the intricate work of revision arthroplasty, where he gives patients a second chance at mobility when their initial implants have failed.

Before joining Max Hospital, Dr. Sen cultivated his skills and shared his knowledge through various prestigious positions. He served as Director of Orthopedics at Fortis Hospital in Mohali and spent significant time as a professor at PGIMER, Chandigarh, where he helped shape the next generation of orthopedic specialists. His academic journey began at IGMC Shimla, where he completed both his MBBS and MS in orthopedics, later earning his Ph.D. from PGIMER Chandigarh along with DNB certification from the National Board of Examinations in New Delhi.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Sen has maintained an active presence in the global orthopedic community. As a Gold Member of AO TRAUMA-WOC and through memberships in international organizations like SICOT, APOA, and AADO, he has kept Indian orthopedics connected to worldwide advancements. His leadership as Vice President of the Indian Orthopedic Association (2012-2013) further cemented his role as a guiding figure in the field.

The respect Dr. Sen commands among his peers is evident in the numerous orations he has been invited to deliver across the globe. From the prestigious OASAC Oration in Colombo to speaking engagements at the Baltic States Orthopedic Surgeons Conference in Latvia, his insights have been sought internationally. Within India, he has received distinguished honors including the Golden Jubilee Commemoration Oration and numerous eponymous orations across the country.

What truly sets Dr. Sen apart is his forward-thinking approach to orthopedic treatment. Beyond conventional surgery, he has pioneered work in stem cell therapy for avascular necrosis, offering hope to patients who might otherwise face joint replacement. His expertise in addressing failed orthopedic procedures has made him a go-to specialist for some of the most challenging cases—those that other surgeons might hesitate to undertake.
